Although we have an older home (91 years old) we sometimes discuss if it would be economical to convert from just a furnace and window air conditioners to a heating and central air unit. I know there use to be a tax break on such upgrades on home improvements but wouldn't the age of a home be a considering factor? Has anyone with an older home ever take on such a venture?

It really depends on the size of your home. I have an older home as well and it is so much more affordable to have a swamp cooler instead of central because our house is small and that one unit cools every room down. If your house is larger and isn't really cooling anything beyond the living room and the front end, then you might want to go central.
