Well it is that time, my current laptop is in need for an update. Does anyone know if there is a way to build a laptop, similarly to how you can build your own desktop by ordering all the components and putting it together yourself? I have tried googling around for it but it has not yielded much.

I don't think you can upgrade laptops or assemble one like you can with a desktop since their parts and designs are more specialized. You can get memory or new hard drives for them but I think that's about as far as you can upgrade them internally. You can definitely order laptops that you can customize to some degree by choosing their cpu, ram, etc.

It's possible even with laptops but I don't recommend it. The parts can be hard to find and more expensive, then you have to make sure everything actually fits inside the case you'll be using, need to make sure the wiring is long enough and the building part itself is no pleasure either. I'd very much recommend against this.

You can easily change the harddrive and the RAM, that's about it. Everything else gets complicated with laptops. There are some companies such as Alienware who build custom laptops for you, most of them are quite expensive. You could also drop by at your local computer store (one that specialises in computers and IT, not one that sells everything electronic) and ask them about it.

It is possible to upgrade certain components on certain laptops, but it would be hassle and money that it would be worth. If you are looking to upgrade components, you are much better building a custom PC. They might not be as convenient as laptops for travel but they are easily upgrade-able.
