My grandmother went to a day care center a few years ago and that was the best thing that ever happened to her. She loves the activities there because she sings, reads, bakes, I think that took years off her and the activity really made her well. Are your relatives in these day care centers as well? How expensive are they?

Really? I have never heard that, all I've ever heard was negative things about these kinds of places. It is nice to hear that she enjoys it though. The activities are probably nice, I know my older relatives have a hard time getting out the older they get. However, no, I don't have any relatives in places like these. My great grandfather lives with my aunt, and my husbands dad lives in a retirement community. He still lives on his own, it is just cheaper and you have to be 65+ to be there. Nice little place, nice and quiet.

My grandmother is really independent and she managed to go there on her own, I mean, my mother went with her just to check the place out and all the conditions, but this was maybe 2-3 years ago and since then she is a new woman, she always has a lot commitments and she is very busy, I say good for her, a new life close to the nineties.

I have never really heard of day care centres for adults. All the places I know of, cater for children. I think it sounds like a wonderful idea. A place where you can go and socialise and be productive and creative as well. Are those places intended to slowly get people used to the idea of the joys of moving into a retirment home?

In fact, they are a retiring home as well, possibly I've explained myself poorly, but my grandmother only used the daycare center. They have also a number of beds and people that life there full-time, other more independent elders only go there to have lunch, spend the day, drink the afternoon tea and they go on to their places for the rest of the day.

I've heard a lot of complaints, too.

I think what it comes down to a lot of times, though, is whether it's voluntary or not.

The ones who are able to go themselves and are choosing to attend....are likely much happier with those places.....than those who are just dropped off as a "childcare" type option and they have no interest in doing anything at the place in the first place.

If someone chooses to be in a place then since they choose to be there because they probably want to socialize with other elderly people then quite obviously they'd be happy.

In the rural town where I live, we don't have daycare centers for old people or retirement homes. Since everyone here has some farmland it passes on to the youngest kid in the family but the catch is, that 'kid' has to take care of his/her grandparents until they pass on.

Yeah, I think you focus an important point, if people go there voluntarily or they are forced by their relatives. The case of my grandmother is voluntary, she decided she wanted to go and she went, most likely she was lucky because I am also aware of institutions that don't offer the best care, so I am really happy for her. They even have a newspaper there about the things they do, she appears in a lot of pictures and she is super happy with it. :)

Interesting, I also have never heard of day care centers for adults, only for kids. That's a good thing if your grandmother was happy during her stay there. But I must wonder, how expensive are the rates over there? I assume that if the amenities are good, then the charge would be expensive as well.

She is happy sidney, she still goes there. To be honest I never discussed money with her, she has her own life savings even if she receives a miserable pension from the state (less than 300€ per month), so the day care center can be that expensive. I think my mother and aunts also help her, but now you got me curious, I will ask how much she pays per month.
