So I know absolutely nothing about lawn maintenance or care, but I'd really like to start doing so and growing a real lawn in our front and backyard. The issue is everything is completely dead and I have no idea where or with what the best place to start is.

What would step 1 be into repairing a completely dead lawn?

If the grass is totally dead and full of weeds. I would dig up all the lawn and buy some turf. Before placing it look for any weed roots. Kill them with solution or just rip them out. When you plant the turf spray it with some nutrients weekly to keep it healthy. In the winter you may need to purchase special winter solution so your grass doesn't die!

Till your lawn and try to get rid of the dried up surface. Fill it with new grass (you have to get supplies from somewhere if you don't have any or ask help from a professional). You can get a landscape artist to add some art to your lawn. Add bushes, flowering plants and some seedlings (if it's a tree, try to give it enough space).
