We have a lot of items in our homes that have slowly become obsolete. One of those items is the thermostat in most homes. With newer technology most can be replaces with programmable thermostats which will adjust the temperature setting throughout the day and keep the home comfortable and save a lot of money. We need it a little cooler in order to sleep so having the thermostat lower the temperature an hour before bedtime makes sense. Raising it back up before we wake makes it comfortable. If we are off to work five days a week, we don't need our homes all that warm.

Another device that is available is the heat and motion detecting lighting system. This is designed to switch off the lights in an empty room and turn them back on when someone enters. This can cut down on electricity consumption if you tend to leave the lights on.

Newer homes are being built with other technology to allow the heat to be in certain rooms and not others. Smart Phones can control the computers in the homes and you can turn on the heat on your drive home from a vacation. The items I have suggested will save you money and can be incorporated into existing homes.
