On my recent water bill I found out that I am paying more for the standing charge than my actual water use. I don't know whether to congratulate myself for being so efficient, or to be concerned about the high standing charge. It stands at £8/month and my actual water usage is £6.50 per month totalling £14.50 what is your standing charge, if any?

I don't think we have a standing charge in my country. Lucky! :)

We did have to fork up a significant amount to get a connection, though. So there's that. I think we paid more than a year's worth?

In the US we would call it a fixed rate bill or flat rate bill. I would contact the water company to let them know to see if you can get refunded. Why should you have to be charged for water usage your not using? That extra money can really add up.
