Do you have any stories about how professional products can be bought for cheaper than basic?

In most places a store brand Rubik's cube would cost around $15/£10. These cubes will be very low quality and are sometimes difficult to turn. The cube I own which is the same one used by the world champion cost me only £5! So you are getting a top of the range, world-class professional product for half the price of the standard model. There must be other instances out there when the high quality niche versions actually cost less than the mass produce supermarket versions.
