I have a Trust and I never give to any institutions but directly to those who need the money. I first check for the authenticity of the need and expect them to give me some proof of their need and then give them a cheque but never cash. This way I know my money goes where it deserves. I also do a follow up on their progress.

In many of the sites, there is an option to donate your money to charitable causes once you reach the redemption threshold. So far, I have not chosen that option as a means of cash out. The time and energy what it takes to touch a redemption is too intense an effort for me to donate.

We donate to various local charities. I am always uneasy about donating money especially to anybody that I cannot hand the money or donated objects to in person. Donating clothes to a local shelter, clothing collection bin or a thrift shop is a wonderful way to give back to your community. It is just one of the ways we donate.

We also like to donate food and baby items. Do you donate? If so, local or do you give money to an agency?

Did you know that 90% of the Salvation Army kettle donations go right back to the community in which you donate?!? That is an incredible percentage when compared to other similar organizations. Plus, most of their "staff" are volunteers. And if they are paid, they have quite the work load. I just started volunteering with them recently and I have been wonderfully impressed. If you go to charitynavigator.org or similar sites you can find out the salaries of many charity executive directors.

For example, the CEO of the Susan Komen foundation earns 506k+ and the president earns 606k+. The CEO of the American Cancer Society earns over 788k a year.

Anyway, what are your thoughts? To me that seems excessive. I mean the doctors who treat cancer don't even get half of that, yet the guy in charge of a charity earns 788k a year????

I some how posted in the wrong area, so sorry. So My favorite charity is Covenant House here in Vancouver, BC. They take in youth who are homeless and most of them have run away because of abuse. A sister who is a nun runs the house and I think it's a great charity. The monies goes to feeding and lodging the kids. They also help them get into schooling and get counseling. This is my favorite charity.
