I am planning on giving a gift certificate for a salon and spa service for a friend of mine who's birthday is just around the corner. It's my first time to give this kind of certificate as a gift though so I'm curious if you guys have ever given one and what the reaction of your recipient was. I don't have any other intentions but to give a gift for someone who's having a birthday but I know that for some people, receiving this kind of gift can also somehow serve as an...

I'm curious what folks here think about gift baskets. Do you like buying them? Do you have favorite places where you shop for them? Do you generally think that they are a good value or that they are overpriced?

I've seen some that are really lovely and seem to be worth the cost. I've seen others that seem cheaply made with more filler than fun stuff but still have a high price tag.

I think nice ones do make great gifts, especially when they are custom made. Would you buy custom made gift...
Maybe it doesn't sound like a very exciting gift, but if you know someone who is pretty much broke and could really use it, would you do it?

I may just go with a Walmart card and let them use it for whatever. They can buy groceries with it if they want or buy other stuff. I was just thinking that the grocery store is much closer. They don't always go to Walmart because they...
They are really cute and some are ridiculously creative. Instead of sweets, they are constructed from usable materials such as baby toys, socks, bibs, and of course diapers (and then decorated).

I made one for my daughter's shower, but it was just a tiered "cake," for my first try. There are so many cute variations these...
In the past I've split these down to use as stocking fillers at Christmas or little gifts for people as a thank you gift. I've also bought packs that happened to contain two people's favorite items and split the pack to use it for both of those people. If you can get these packs on a buy one get one free type of deal this means you can give even more people gifts from those gift...

Well, Christmas is still far but as early as September, I already make a list of the people I will be giving gifts to and think of a good gift I could give to each one. When I finish my list, I would usually set a specific budget for them so I won't have a possibility of spending way beyond what I can afford.

How about you guys, do you set a budget for your gifts especially if you have a lot of recipients on your list or do you just buy accordingly?

Here are some things that he really likes: Cthulu, fun socks (though he doesn't have any, because they're not cheap and he runs through them a lot), random old signs. Him and I also went to an antique store awhile ago, and there was an antique hanging scale there that he REALLY had his eye on, and it was only $20, but it was sold before...
