The first thing I check is if the reviewer actually bought the book because for some reason Amazon reviews are filled with reviews from people who don't even seem to have purchased the product in the first place. Also I tend to check elsewhere for additional reviews and I also try and be a little bit more discerning when the way the praises are written are a bit too artificial sounding.
