Tablets should not be compared to laptops because the two things serve different functions. There might be some similarities but overall, a laptop is not just for entertainment but also for work and heavy gaming that a tablet could not handle. I know that he evolution of tablet is really fast and now there are so many new tablets that are powerful but laptop is always the choice when you are in the office making presentations or you are a gamer. Tablets are for portable media needs and for reading books I think.
^ Nice point. Although it is very hard not to compare the two because they have the same target market and because of that, people are starting to choose one over the other and that's when people start to compare them.
Well I will say it all depends on the person and what they are doing. Now I have seen some business people that only use tablets because they don't want to have to carry a big and bulky laptop around all day. Trust me, walking around with a computer is murder on your shoulders. In another instance, a laptop can do things that tablet may not be able to do. For example, a tablet may not be compatiable with some kinds of software that a laptop computer can do. So I will say it will depends on the individual's preference, their job description, or level of technological proficiency.
I like my laptop for now. A tablet doesn't have everything that a laptop has. I don't see whats all the hype about it.
I still feel that a tablet and laptop has too many differences to actually make one or the other redundant. For me, a tablet is more for on-the-go internet browsing, music, games or in general, entertainment purposes. A laptop on the other hand would have the capabilities to perform much more such as working (involving long periods of typing), software support, intense gaming etc. The tablet is just unable to give us the kind of performance a laptop can currently. I just cannot imagine trying to type a hundred paged work report with a tablet, having to hold it while i use my two thumbs to fleet around the touchscreen keyboard! For gaming, would a tablet be able to handle the graphics and sounds? Internet connection is also less stable on tablets as compared to laptops and these are just some of the drawbacks I personally feel tablets have. Maybe in the future, laptops might eventually get replaced, but for now, the tablet is still unable to surpass the laptop in my opinion.
For someone that has serious work, like programming or running a big website business, the laptops will remain the best option for a good time. Tablets simply don't rise up to the challenge; you cannot install loads of programs on them, you don't have the required resources to run programs, and many other lacks.
Unless you're refering to both items having mobility I rather doubt they target the same market. People who consider themselves hip or who don't think they are especially computer literate gravitate to tablets. People who need to have their computer with them like students, scientists, and those dealing with computer-reliant equipment target laptops. Not the same thing at all.
Laptops are still way superior than tablets for me; maybe not for that long now that Windows 8 tablets are just around the corner. But I still like having a physical keyboard and a mouse trackpad; it's easier to manage than a touch screen to me.
I prefer laptops over tablets (right now). I say this because I know for sure these tablets are becoming more advanced as the versions progress. The complaints here about tablets I can already foresee as a non issue in the near future. In any case, laptops should, must and will surely be phased out because the rate of technological advancement is rapidly evolving. Did someone really mention netbooks? I say netbooks were a failed experiment just those 3D handheld gaming systems.
I want a tablet SO badly. It would be so much easier for me to do my job with a tablet. Most of the time I'm on my phone workwise and only have little data entry. It would be perfect. I'm currently saving $30 a week until I have the money for a new iPad.
No need to go for an iPad, if your budget is rather tight there are plenty of options, and I mean good ones. There are thousands of Android tablets manufacturers, most of them Chinese, that have all kinds of tablets available. Then you have the ones from the big brands like Samsung, Sony, etc. that are even better than the iPad (same resolution and screen, camera, specs, etc.) but those are more expensive of course. You have plenty of options online. If you want to give a Chinese one a try (there are many good ones available, I have one from the Ainol brand myself), you should try pandawill.com. Not trying to advertise here, they're just one of the best store there is for tablets, even though their customer service is sometimes not good at all. I've seen many buy from the "Hyundai" brand too and they're really, really good!
Well look on it this way. It was not so long ago that people said that laptops would have replaced desktops, yet desktops are still around and are still being made and sold. So tablets will never replace laptops at least not for another 30 years or so when tablets become as fast, have a bigger hard drive, bigger virtual memory, can host and run much more applications, and have sufficient power. Also there are many people who still love their laptop.
I would prefer the laptop as opposed to a tablet, since I prefer typing using a keyboard than typing on a touch screen. It's quite difficult to type using a touch screen. And since I love gaming, I don't think I can play Grand Theft Auto on a tablet.
It seems like the media and marketers are trying to push the tablet onto consumers too much. Every time I read articles on tech sites they keep repeating over and over how tablets are going to take over computers, how mobile is going to replace computers, etc. Yet I don't see it happening around me. I have friends that have smartphones and tablets, but don't use them exclusively. There is no way companies are going to switch everyone's computers over to tablets and expect them to get any work done on them.
For major work or playing games desk top pc's or laptops are the way to still go. But to goof off here or there when you want portability or maybe still do some light work tablets are ok.
