I totally bake all my own cookies. It only takes like ten to fifteen minutes, and it tastes just as good as store bought and is way healthier. I highly suggest just finding a simple recipe and sticking with it! Store bought cookies are probably marked up like crazy and often contain a lot of preservatives to make sure they can stay on shelves forever before someone buys them.
Sometimes I find the tear and bake cookies on sale really cheap! If it is Pillsbury on sale then I try to add a coupon to that and stock up year round. I saw cinnamon rolls on sale for $1 at my local Vons. Even though it is too hot to bake here, I buy them anyway and save them for a cool morning. It beats running out to the bakery and paying $4 for one cinnamon roll! So much easier to do this than bake from scratch and you can always package them and gift cookies too!
I don't make cookies that often. When i do bake it is usually the holidays. So i buy the dough so i csn focus on decorating them. It isn't frugal, but it is simple.
What a great idea @cluckeyo ! I never thought to put the extra dough in the fridge. There is nothing better than fresh baked cookies. Definitely a healthier option. I do not have a silicone baking mat but I think I'll invest in one. I'm always collecting the 20% off coupons for Bed Bath and Beyond. I know what I'm going to buy there now. I like the idea of easy clean up. Do they come in different sizes? I have some large baking trays and a few smallers ones.
I'm not sure on the sizes. I have a large sheet and my mat covers it pretty well. It's a great little kitchen tool, I highly recommend it! I make pralines and I have not tried my mat on scooping them out. If it does work I will need 3. It does work great for peanut brittle!
