I would take coffee any time over energy drinks. Coffee has kept me company during cramming nights back in college as well as during times of rest and recreation. To perk me up I prefer my coffee hot and black. It's a sure fire way to get the needed energy jolt. I'm not a fan of energy drinks and I try to avoid them due to the high sugar content. However, when no coffee is available on sight and I badly need to stay awake just to get through some tasks, I can tolerate energy drinks. That is only during emergency situations.

I think that most people think like you Athena, they have been to coffee for some years now, they get along fine with it, it's cheaper, so why change? The "problem" is this new generation of teenagers that just might start seeing energy drinks as something that can be consumed in the day-to-day, but it's not the case, it's far more unhealthy than coffee and in the long run can be dangerous for the health.

This problem is caused (partly) by adults who enable the children wrongly. Of course 'back in the day' coffee WAS 'the energy-booster drink'---i.e. that's how it was introduced to me, and the other energy-drinks were introduced as another 'pop' ... 'pop' being (to me) a dessert-drink---i.e. something that's "not good for you," like ice-cream or candy.

(words are funny ... I'd call it 'soda-pop' or 'soda,' but that sounds 'olde-timey'; I'd call it 'coke,' but that makes it sound like a commercial (if not like the drug  ); or I could call it what it is (or what most 'soda pop' is)--a carbonated beverage--but that sounds like I'm ordering it direct from a laboratory :p )

That's why I think the best way to keep 'young men & -women' on the right energy-booster path is to put that picture firmly in their heads---energy-'pop' is like candy (and gives you the same kinda 'boost,' but skips your teeth and goes straight to rotting your brain!)

Coffee always. I do not even put sugar or cream/milk in mine, all I need. Energy drinks are wussy, in my opinion .

Adults might enable children wrongly, but I think that the main consumers from energy drinks are aged above 15, so they can escape quite easily parental control to drink these sort of beverages. So it's pretty much a matter of awareness, people need to know that these energies aren't as "light" as a cup of coffee, they have different effects.

Coffee used to make me not fall asleep the whole night when I started drinking it, but as I continued to drink it, it has no effect on me at all anymore, and I easily fall asleep even after taking 2 glasses. So I definitely prefer energy drinks. One full bottle and it makes me stay up and alert during the times I start to feel drowsy.

It strikes me that these teenagers might think of the energy-drinks as a form of "beer."

I really don't know if they see it as some form of beer, but I would not be too surprised by it. Check out Red Bull ads for example, can it get any cooler than that? You drink a Red Bull and you are the coolest, plus you have energy not being "high", so it can slowly enter their lives without measuring the consequences properly.

I couldn't agree more. I think it's getting better, though, as more people are realizing how bad it is for their kids and themselves to drink that stuff but there will always be a market for those sorts of drinks. They taste good, and the extra energy, as short as it will last, is tempting. But it does rot the brain, doesn't it? It can keep students up during cram sessions and they won't be able to get proper sleep and not getting enough sleep leads to physical illness and hallucinations. I'm glad that there are healthier alternatives coming out more now, and coffee does have some small benefits. Tea is also good.

I would rather go with coffee because I think its probably better for you than energy drinks. I did use to drink red bull and Lucozade to keep me going in an old job. But colleagues would come up to me and tell me how bad Red Bull and in the end it put me off. To be honest nowadays I try to avoid them both coffee and energy drinks.

I never touch energy drinks. I don't like those artificial sweet tastes and smells that give you a quick hype. I am also not big on coffee, but enjoy the occasional cup of Colombian coffee with a bit of soy milk. I am a high strung person by nature, so it doesn't take much for me to stay up or awake if I have to. :)

For me it's not really a matter of taste, but performance. When I am playing competitive sports I need to have a good performance or else I will lose my matches, so I try to get the best of performance and health as well of course, the overall goal apart from winning and having fun is to improve our health, so I really don't want to hurt my health just to win some games.

I used to drink coffee and just supplement with an energy drink occasionally. Now I'm a full blown energy drink addict. I drink a couple a day and only have coffee two or three times a week. It sucks because energy drinks are so much worse for your health than coffee. I wish I had never started drinking energy drinks.

I prefer energy drink than coffee. It is not that I dont like coffee, it just that I have a problem with my digestion. It is the reason why I try to avoid coffee as much as possible. When it comes to energy drink I like red bull or the milder gatorade and powerade.

Energy drinks actually come with more caffeine than energy drinks, however they are laden with much more sugar. I wouldn't advise drinking them daily just as people do not advocate drinking soda daily, the sugar intake would not be healthy at all.

Coffee is much more healthier hence I would definitely prefer to have coffee over energy drink. Also I do not like the taste of energy drink.

I prefer coffee just because they're pretty much healthier and they don't taste like bubbly chemical soda. Also a warm cup of coffee is a bit calming in a way at least for me it is.
