I believe that everyone has tasted a Coca-Cola soda. I will emphasise on Coke. It is a great drink that is available worldwide. Coca-cola invests heavily in its products and you would not fail to see their adverts either on billboards or on tv on a daily basis. However, did you know that you could use coke as a pesticide for your small garden? Research has shown that putting the soda in a bowl and placing it in the middle of your kitchen garden would help a great deal. Components in the soda produce a sweet aroma that attracts pests such as snails. They are drawn towards the bowl and eventually enter inside. they then die. This is a great way to save on costs of buying pesticides.
I have not heard this one before, but it makes sense the more that I think about it. I would probably need to see it in action or at least learn a little more before trying, but I can add it to the list.
I won't be surprise anymore to hear about a new discovery as this, using coke as a pesticide. I have watched several short videos on Facebook where different substances were being converted to something else and function differently from their originally known use. I saw where toothpaste was combined with a soft drink and the mixture was used as a domestic cleaning agent.
Pardon me for saying this but there are lots of smear against Coke in particular like it can be used to clean the sink and toilet bowl. But if that pesticide property is true then that would be a great deal of saving worries in the garden. During the rainy season, the snails are our problem in the backyard garden. They attack the vegetables, eating all the leaves in just one night. What I do is to crush the snails (slugs) and make it into fertilizer for the plants. Maybe I can try this Coke trap in a few weeks from now since the rainy season has already started.
I have not heard about that before. Perhaps it is good to give it a try, as it might be safer than the commercial pesticide since we drink it. I have read about using Coke to wash away the rusty stuff. I wonder what is inside Coke. Should I still drink Coke?
Coke as a pesticide is something totally new to me. I had never thought about this function. Is that really effective? I don't think coca has that power. Or am I worng about its "hidden" powers? I confess I would not be surprised.
Actually what coke does is encourage the ants to go there, pest animals like cicadas, caterpillars and aphids ends up getting eaten by the ants. I had heard many farmers in India had been using this for years but I will not encourage it because ant bites is not a pleasurable experience.
I also have heard about that rumor that Coke can be used to disinfect the toilet, but not as pesticide. I really am a bit hesitant, since if it's a pesticide, ants would die if they drink it. But they don't. So I will take that info with a grain of salt and wait for a scientific body to announce that it is indeed a pesticide.
Its interesting, that coke which is fit for human consumption can be used as a pesticide. I have also made the observation that most commercial products can be adopted for other periphery uses was it not for the cost imperative. The other day, scientists in Israel discovered that viagra can be used in gardening. But I would rather go for cheaper and tested alternatives like pyrethroids for the purpose.
Coke wont be killing the insects, The ants will kill the pest. basically ants will be attracted by the coke and they will kill the aphids, cicadas and caterpillars.
So you basically mean pouring coke on a bowl and keeping in the garden. The garden insects and other pests will be attracted by the sweet aroma, but they will die when they enter the bowl. I though you were talking about using coke as pesticide by spraying on plants. If this was possible, drinking coke will be hazardous to out health (if it kills pest it will also kill humans in the long run). No, I have never used this technique, but I am interested to try this.
Is that really true??? It makes me not want to drink Coca-Cola even more, not that I particularly like it.
I have seen Coke being used as a disinfectant for cleaning toilets and even my father has said that Coke is being used instead of phenols and other regular disinfectants. He says they use it because it removes stains better. I cannot just believe because millions are consuming it on a regular basis and I was shocked to hear where it is being used. But anyway I always hated coke because I hate the flavor and I have never heard of it being used as a pesticide. Thanks for the information.
I've heard it's a good weed killer not that I have tried it, but it worries me if that is what it does to weeds and pests, what does it do to your insides? I don't actually drink coke, and never really liked it, but one should consider what effects it does have.
I have seen many videos which show many functions of the coke but have never heard of using it as a pesticide. Coke will save a good amount of money in gardening supplies as it is way cheaper than normal pesticides. I like the fact that it is not dangerous for kids as it doesn't have that poisonous harsh smell that spreads all over.
@kamai I guess if more farmers used Coke in their farms, they would save a whole lot of money and we also would not have to ingest too many chemicals that come from pesticides in our food.
