Do you use one? Which is the best utility, System Mechanic or CCleaner? Myself, I use System Mechanic which is a paid service costing around 30 dollars a year, unless you get a special deal. Anyhow, so far, it's kept my eMachines computer, which I bought back in 2011, in top shape with no problems at all.

Does anyone know of any other free or paid utilities?

I've been using CCleaner in the past and it worked out great until recently when the computer got infected with viruses. What happened was, I was using the computer one day and then CCleaner came right up and it asked me to clean stuff on my computer. I did the clean up and after that I've reviewed the deleted junk files and to my surprise, they were actually my important documents. Upon knowing what happened, I went on and recovered the documents one by one and did a backup as soon as I got them back. Afterward, I checked the registry for rogue installed programs and I've found a bunch and deleted them. Since then, I do the cleaning manually and I've never used a cleaning program ever again.

I use CC Cleaner, and it's worked well for m. There are several other free and paid options. I think the one AVG puts out is called PC Tune Up, if I remember correctly. Some people will insist that you need a paid program. For people who want to go that route, it's a good idea to check for deals on this kind of stuff around the holidays.

A lot of people also use tools like this thinking it will fix other problems with their computer, when sometimes what they really need is an upgrade in some area, updates to things like drivers, a defrag, etc. I'm no expert (not even close!), but there are basic maintenance issues that a lot of people either aren't aware of or simply ignore.

Well, actually, System Mechanic will initiate updates for your computer. However, I'm not sure if the free or paid version of cCleaner will do the same. Also I'm sure the paid versions of any cleaning software have a defragging component.

I've been using CCleaner for how many months now and I can say that it does the job well. Not long before I downloaded CCleaner, I experienced several lags and hiccups on my PC which is totally annoying especially when I'm working. Then my cousin told me to download a cleaning software to clean junks on my PC and he recommended CCleaner. Since I had CCleaner, I never experienced any lags on my PC which is I'm certainly thankful. I'm using the free one and still thinking if I'll be upgrading to the pro version :)

I have used CCleaner before, but that was a long time ago, so I forgot what it did to my PC. I didn't reinstall it again when my PC got formatted. I actually already forgot what it did to my PC, but I was fairly satisfied with it when I used it.

None. If you keep your computer free from viruses and malware, you should be able to clean your computer manually, by uninstalling any programs you don't need from the control panel, defragging your hard drive with the inbuilt defrag function, and deleting files you don't need.

This is one area where I would think that if you do your research, you will be able to find something for free that does the trick. I know that I have tried in the past, but did not really try so I cannot speak to it too much.

As of this writing, I am still using CCleaner. I customize it according to my needs so that my important files won't be touched. I have using it for several years and I didn't find anything amiss. CCleaner is a free computer "rubbish" cleaner. Though there is a paid version one, but I would prefer to use the free version of the program

    CCleaner for me too
I haven't had any problems so far with them. Though I find it not very efficient at times but otherwise I am on the free version and quite satisfied.

It happened to me too. But this time it deleted some registry files and my OS started behaving strangely. Then I had to format the PC and reinstall Windows. But I think this was not a fault of CCleaner as I was supposed to take a backup of registry files before doing anything. It also warns us before doing registry cleanup.

So I think CCleaner is quite effective but always think twice before doing anything with registry files. There is another utility software called Garysoft utilities which is more advanced than CCleaner. But nowadays I do not use any utility software and do the cleaning manually.
