Can someone explain what the difference is between malt and Distilled vinegar? I've never understood what is different about it apart from the colour, and I didn't think that was a real issue. I've used malt before to unclog drains and stuff and never had a problem. They always recommend distilled in cleaning recipes.

Malt vinegar is made from barley, which has been malted then brewed into an ale, which is then aged into a vinegar. White vinegar is made from corn, which is combined with water and fermented into a distilled white vinegar.

Where I live, and throughout the US, malted vinegar generally costs a lot more than white vinegar, which is probably the main reason white vinegar is used for other purposes as well, such as cleaning. I'm assuming the white vinegar is much cheaper to produce as well.

Honestly, I've never heard of cleaning or other household uses of vinegar other than white vinegar. While all vinegars have an odor, white vinegar is the most neutral of them all.
