They say the average person spends 10-20% more just by having a credit card. Now, imagine what that figure might be on say a coupon or a sale item. Admittedly, I do tend to buy things on sale even if the need isn't necessarily there. Usually I coupon stack though so the price ends up ridiculously low to the point where I think less and less about whether this is a good purchase or not.
I would, but only for a select few items. I'd maybe be up for trying out a new brand if they were on sale, but I wouldn't buy items I don't normally use just because they are cheap. I already do drink soda, for example, so seeing a brand that has a discounted price would most likely make me buy that brand instead for the time of their promo period, and if it turns out that I like them enough then I may consider being a regular buyer of their brand in the future. Promo periods are a great way to try out new products because I rarely would risk buying a sub-par product if their prices were just similar to my regular brands.
You need to be careful with that behavior, it's a slippery slope. Everyone likes discounts, sales and coupons but once you start buying unnecessary stuff, just because it's on sale then you have an addiction problem, especially when you freely compare it to drugs and say you do it all the time.
Oh yea, absolutely. This mainly pertains to junk food for me. Soda, Oreos, chips, etc. If there's a good price on those items, i'll go ahead and buy them. I don't mind spending a little extra during those sort of shopping trips, because I have a pretty solid control over what I spend most times I go to the grocery store. So an extra $10-$15 a trip really doesn't hurt my budget all that much and I do enjoy having that sort of junk food on occasion
I'd have definitely bought it if it were me. I'm always mindful of buying things just because they are on sale but in this case I think it would be right for me to take advantage primarily because soda doesn't spoil anyway so I know I can keep it for as long as I need to, and buying a lot now is pretty much the same to me as buying them one by one over the course of a few months, and this way I get to spend less on them. The only time I'd pass it up is if it meant that I would spend a lot of my money leaving me with not much to spend on other things but in this case since soda is fairly cheap I think I would have gone for it.
Oh they always rope me in for something! The wife is more prone to this then I am, but I think we all do this from time to time. If you didn't know too, some stores sell things call "loss leaders." This is when they intentionally sell something that either has no profit or even at a loss just to get you into the store because they know you will buy other stuff too.
That often happens to me whenever I go to the mall. Before, I always fell for the bait and bought stuff that weren't even necessary. Nowadays, I've learned the error of my ways and try to avoid buying things that aren't even in my list. However, if it's something I badly need, then a sale will surely not stop me.
Hmm, this is a tricky question. Okay, I admit that I sometimes buy things on sale that I have no use for. But in fairness to me, what I buy on those occasions are potential gift items. Like the stuff toy that went on sale, 1 piece was for 300 and 2 pieces for 200 each (total of 400), isn't that a good buy. I took 6 pieces and saved a lot, right? And last Christmas, I used all of those 6 as gifts to little girls who were so glad to receive.
If I went to the store with the intention of spending X amount of dollars, and had just enough to get what was on my list, I probably would not. But if I were just buying a few things with no strict budget, then I probably would. When I was drinking pop regularly, I was buying it several times a week anyhow, so why not take advantage of some savings when they are available? What you're proposing is essentially what "extreme couponers" do anyhow. Obviously it works for them. It would also depend on whether or not I could use the items up in time before they go bad. Soda would hold up for a while, unopened. But something like a bagged salad mix, I might be more apprehensive about. A few months ago, one of our grocery stores were selling large packs of different hot peppers for only 70 cents a pound. They are usually around $3.99 a pound, so this was a huge deal. I snapped up a bunch of packs, and they have been in my freezer for weeks, but I have still not been able to use them all up yet. I'm hoping they will last a while longer before going completely bad.
I have been known to buy lots of something if they are on sale. Whereas if they were not on sale i would not have them at all. Campbell's soup is a great example. I normally keep a few in the pantry but if they go on sale for 50 cents, I'm buying 8 cans. I seem to do this with nonperishable items mostly. The other day chocolate milk was on sale and I bought 10 cartons. Each carton was only 99 cents for a 1L carton so why not. It was good savings and I felt like I got a great deal.
In this situation the major consideration is: 1. If I have adequate storage for the item 2. If it is possible for me to use the product before expiration 3. If the saving is enough to warrant me stocking up on the item If these requirements are satisfied then I will take advantage of the deal because to "a penny saved is a penny earned."
Don't worry for life is for learning. I too definitely would buy the in-store sale for soda, if I could carry it. I ride the bus and not that young, so all that soda is a good deal, but I'd have to go the next day with my Dolly Trolly and hope my arms hold up while boarding and leaving the bus to come home. Once this past holiday season, my Mom had an appointment that my cousin would take us to and we asked if he could take us to the market for soda on sale 5 2 litters for $5. I got the soda and I was so happy at holiday time thanks to my patient cousin who helped us. Not being young and not having a car is a hindrance when there is a good sale for heavy things. Life is for learning so don't feel so bad. I'd have bought the sale if I could carry it home. I bus and it's so heavy carrying those 2 litter sodas at one time. This particular sale I'd have to pass up for there is no way I could carry 6, 2 litter sodas at one time. I have a trolley dolly so I can carry heavy things, but I've got to haul it up and down the bus, so I got be be sure I can carry it.
It's relatively easy to be tempted to buy something you hadn't planned to because it's on sale. If it's something you'd have to buy anyway, it won't be all that bad. In the past before I started setting limits on the amount of money I spent each month, I used buy things that were on sale because I didn't want to lose out on deals . I no longer buy anything I don't need because if I do I have to make do with something I actually will need and I can't choose that alternative.
Nope.. if I don't need it, I don't buy it. My wants are few and not things I can necessarily buy more of anyway. Needs, maybe. A big sale on toilet paper, for example, might get me to bring home more than we need at the moment, but we need it regardless lol, so buying more isn't wasteful or bad for our health
It's very easy to fall into this trap, especially if you have a few extra pennies to spend. I do try to resist the temptation, especially if t's something perishable, that's likely to spoil before I get chance to eat it. But I have previously succumbed to the temptation. Nowadays not so much because I don't have the money to squander!
I have a stock-up price for most items that are on my usual grocery list. Soda pop is one of the items, as my husband is nearly addicted to his once-daily Coca-Cola. When Coke products go in sale for $1 for a 2 Liter or less, I stock up and I will purchase the extra amounts in order to get the sale price. I do this for most pantry items that have a long shelf life, such as pasta, cereal, tomato sauce, and canned goods. I also stock up on meat, bread, and cheese when it goes on sale or is deeply discounted, because they freeze pretty well. I will purchase more than my usual amount if the price is right and if I have room for it.
Since, I drink quite a bit of soda, I would have bought more to get the deal because I know that I'll eventually need soda again, so the two free bottles will be used. If it's an item you buy regularly, I see nothing wrong with stocking up or buying a little more to get a BOGO deal.
Of course I do buy stuff that I probably shouldn't. Heck, the majority of stuff I own is because it was on sale. I think people are crazy if they don't go for stuff that is on sale instead of paying full price.
