I am very serious about checking expiration dates. I won't even eat certain foods if it's within a month of the expiration date. I try to purchase foods as far away from their expiration date as possible. On the flip side, I also try to purchase foods with a shorter expiration spans. That usually means that the product has less preservatives.
Yes I do check expiration dates on the products I buy, and I even recheck them before I use them to make sure they haven't expired since I have bought them, This is just a habit of mine, that I don't think I will ever kick or want to kick.
Always! I often route through the items until I reach the back of the shelf - seems this is where they keep the freshest stuff in most grocery stores. I've had some bad experiences with expired foods (namely milk) and they've absolutely scarred me. Besides, there are plenty of items that I have no intention of consuming all in one gulp or sitting. I usually have leftover milk right up until the day of expiration so timeframe and expiry dates are very important if I want to get the most bang for my buck and reduce waste!
I check the dates everytime because it is extremely important to do this because if you eat something expired, it can definitely ruin your health and then you will rent it for the rest of your life. Therefore I can't buy a product without checking the date.
I always check the dates on fresh foods, and I must confess to being guilty of sorting through the stock to find a package with a later expiry date on it. I know I shouldn't really do that, but if I'm paying for it, I want it to last as long as possible, so there's no risk of wasting the product. I'm not one of these people who just has to use things before the date expires though - most foods have a safety window of a day or two when they're still perfectly fine to eat.
In reference to this thread from a recent incident. That occurred as early as last week? I bought a bag of wings from my local grocer and got them home. And took them out of the freezer a few hours later to cook? When I examined the expiration date (which took me a pretty long while to find by the way), it said March 6 2013! This is May! Needless to say I returned them. Purchased a few items of equal $9.00 value. But man, I never really bothered to check frozen wing bags because you just assume, ya know? That they're safer than regular unfrozen chicken or poultry.
You're not the only person that does that, I do it as well. I don't think you need to feel guilty because I'm sure a lot of people do it too. Occasionally, I would even pick potato chips behind the shelves because the front bags may be crushed.
I mean why wouldn't you. It could potentially put yourself in a position where you eat outdated food that may or may not be bad for you (depending on type of food).
I definitely check the expiration date on most foods before buying them. I too am guilty of trying to get the milk towards the back of the shelf for a few extra days of freshness. I can be slow about finishing things like a jug of milk by myself before the expiration date so I try to gauge if the expiration date is too close to make the purchase worthwhile.
I usually check expiration dates for milk and dairy products only. Most other things I get are perishable goods so I don't bother with it. It is a good idea to check expiration dates but I am always in a hurry to check out so I don't bother as often as I should. I shop weekly too and buy things small in small quantity and these things usually don't have a chance to expire too.
I never used to check the dates but that all changed last year when I eat something that was sold to me past its use by date, Now I check pretty much everything - even canned foods. I don't know if it is the same in other countries but in the UK they out the newer stuff at the back.
yeah I ever buy anything without looking at the expiration date, and a day later I was admitted to the hospital
I'm not really in charge of buying the groceries at home, so I don't usually do it when I buy from the supermarket. I do tend to forget to check the expiration date of whatever it is that I'm buying and just grab the item, but when it comes to bread and pastries, then that's the only time that I remember to check the expiration date.
I check the dates often because I have gotten things that have been expired before. So since than I always check the dates cause you never know I once got a candy from a store that was 3 YEARS OLD so I check everything from grocery store to the gas station.
I always check the date on dairy items , like milk. It seems like they can be very touchy, and I look for the freshest one when I buy a gallon of milk, assuming that there is more than one date available . Another thing I have found, is that some stores will mark the items down when they are about to go out of date, so that they can get them sold before they expire. I have found some really great deals on produce this way, but you have to check everything over and buy only the freshest ones of what is marked down. You can actually save a lot on produce, dairy, bread, and even meat, if you find a store that does the markdowns, and then shop on those days, for the savings.
I always check the date before throwing anything into the basket. My little son has learned this from me and he double checks dates. I also try to buy stuff that is freshest. I may go through the whole batch of cans/ packs to find the freshest one. People often give me the strange looks.. I don't care too much about that though.
I do check expiration dates! I do because I have a lot of experience working in stores, and gas stations. I used to help put away the truck at the gas station I worked at. Some people wouldn't rotate and I would have to fix it. I know for a fact people will just put the newer things in front of the older, and I don't like it, so I always check.
I always check the dates on everything I buy. Before I use to just grab items without checking dates until I had to return an item cause it was bad. Most people don't bother checking, especially can goods. They think because it comes in a can, it'll last forever. I have picked up cans that have expired months ago that were still on the shelves, so it's really important to check dates on everything. Lord knows what would happen to you if you ate something from a can that expired a year ago. Who knows, you might turn green, purple or blue. Or you just might croak. Whatever the case may be, it definitely can't be good for you.
