I have been wanting to grow mushrooms and have been reading up all I can to grow them at home.. The starter kits are all that are available.. but I may not get them where I live.. Does anyone grow mushroom and do you have suggestions to offer?

Oops sorry wrong forum category :/

That's a really interesting thing to take on. I do a lot of gardening but don't know anyone growing their own mushrooms. I know my Dad did a bit as a child. He grew up in the country, and he still talks about how good the mushrooms were.

It may sound funny, but I have never seen or heard of anyone growing their own mushrooms. I'm not sure what climates they grow in, but I'm sure it would be quite interesting to try and grow them. I do a lot of gardening but have never tried growing mushrooms.

I have heard of a number of people growing their own mushroom and selling it too. This is such an easy crop to grow.. takes just about a week to ten days to harvest and if you have the space you could make good money out of this.
There are small starter kits sold in the market... you could do this at home. You just need a bit of temperature control. I am really very interested and am doing my own research on this at the moment.

I used to think it was difficult to grow your own mushrooms, but from what I have been reading lately, it may not be that complicated after all. There seems to be some trial and error to it if you choose not to buy a kit, but I'm willing to experiment, after all, what is there to lose? Either you'll grow mushrooms or nothing will come up; it's not as if you would poison yourself.

These two links make it seem fairly easy:

I love fresh mushrooms, but I've never considered growing them. I've seen lots of wild mushroom, but I would never eat them because they could be poisonous. I love the idea of growing my own vegetables, though.

    Great links.

I live in an apartment, but I would love to be able to start growing some vegetables. Mushrooms seem like a great place to start. I would love to be able to grow portobello mushrooms since they are meatier. They are expensive in the markets and it would save me a lot of money to be able to grow them.

I have read these two posts earlier .. which convinced me that mushroom is not all that hard to grow.. I am really willing to try this... I just need some space.. Once I locate a suitable space .. i will begin my experiment... Thanks Chanell.. nothing is really hard if you put your mind to it.

    You're Welcome Maddie!

Parker, there are a lot of web pages for container and apartment gardening. What you can grow will depend on the windows you have and whether or not you have a balcony. This link may be helpful for figuring out what you can grow in the space you have:
