On regular days, eating at buffets does not really help you with your budget. However, if you are on the mission to celebrate a loved one's birthday or any other special occasion, then buffets are a better bargain compared to dining at fancy restaurants. Each person will be able to eat several servings of entrees, viands, side dishes, desserts and drinks for as long as possible within the allotted time. This set-up is more than cost-officient.
I think that they work well if you eat a lot. They typically don't cost much money to eat at but wonder if you don't eat the $7 that you paid. I don't actually know how much they cost, but you might not eat all your money's worth. At college, we have that kind of thing set up. Breakfast at my school was like maybe $4. So, I would go in sometimes in the mornings and grab a bagel and eat that with me while I was headed to class. Now, does that mean I will eat the $4 worth? No, probably not. So all in all it's all about if you're going to eat your money's worth.
