A few years ago, our utility provider came in and replaced our standard meter with a new one that was able to wirelessly transmit meter readings to their headquarters.

Now the byproduct of such an installation meant we also had a wireless meter with a digital display that computed estimated costs and real time energy usage. The idea is that it flashes amber and red if your usage is a lot, meaning that you should be more energy conscious. Indeed, I was more aware of simply fully turning things off instead of letting things run into standby and I think I perhaps saved a marginal amount (still, it all adds up over the year especially with rising energy costs)

I think these meters can be purchased without needing anything like what was done to our house but it's something that may interest those who want to be more aware of their energy usage.
