What are some tips and tricks for making your fruits last longer? One tip I heard was to put foil around the end of your bananas to help them stay fresher longer!
The ideal is to eat the fruit in prime condition, but sometimes it is impossible because we buy too much and just keep going. This requires consider some points that will extend the life of the fruit. First we must find the right place to store the fruit. This site should be a ventilated and cool to allow several things at once. Keep them in a container of natural fibers such as wicker, allowing the transpiration is ideal. To do this we must remove them from the plastic containers that prevent perspiration from fruits, constantly expel moisture. Often the fruit we buy is too green and can't eat, so it is necessary to accelerate their maturation process. To do what we will mix the green fruit with a mature specimen that generates ethylene and thus accelerate the process of maturation of other pieces of fruit. In the case of wanting to delay ripening of fruit to keep it any longer we have to do is keep them in the fridge, but sometimes this isn't the best solution, as there are too wet or cold refrigerators that just accelerating the process of maturation.
I heard that if you put bananas in the refrigerator they will stay in the condition you put them in there as for up to 2 weeks. I think the outside will still turn brown but the insides will be preserved.
Putting bananas in the refrigerator will make them last a little longer by a few days. Once the banana has been frozen it only good for cooking. I just try to purchase the amount that will be eaten before it starts to spoil. If it starts to spoil it is cooked or put in a smoothie.
Thanks so much for this tip. I have never heard of this before. I'm going to give it a try. I usually use old bananas to make banana nut bread.
I saw a tip somewhere for making lettuce last longer. Something about cutting it and putting it into a mason jar. The only reason I don't ever buy lettuce is becuase I end up wasting half of it so I hope it works!
Other than freezing them (if you're planning on cooking or baking them later) your best bet is probably to make a point not to buy more than you need.
Wrap them up and put them in the fruit. Honestly, that is the only thing you could do. I concur with classicnyer, just purchase what you need and no more. If you do purchase more than what you will consume, you will waste both food and money.
I buy fruits that are not really ripe enough.. but will become nice and ripe in a couple of days.. I do this especially with bananas. I do think we should not buy what we cannot consume while it is good.. Make banana bread if it gets too ripe. I often make muffins with fruits that are overly ripe. I cut wash and put lettuce in glass jars with a bit of olive oil on them and store them in the fridge.. this keeps them fresh through the week. I cut and freeze papaya leftover for another dessert later.
The only tip that I know of to make fruits last longer is to refrigerate them. Or buy them when they are not ripe yet, so that when you take them home it will last longer.
I have used these bags before: Log In I don't see as drastic of results as they claim or show in their pictures, but I do seem to get my fruits to last a bit longer when I use them.
I saw a youtube video on that a while back, and apparently it does work. I think they said the lettuce will last for about a week or so. The person that was making them did prepared salads in the jar, then vacuum sealed them. I guess this makes sense, since trying to do that with vacuum bags would just crush the lettuce. However, if you don't already own all the equipment to do this, that's going to be a bit pricey up front.
One tip you can try for preserving a banana is to freeze it. Slice the banana, place it in a freezer bag and store it in your freezer. You can make healthy banana ice cream with frozen banana or you can just let it defrost and eat it normally.
