The Geek Squad is a great service. They have had to fix our home desktop multiple times, and have done a great job. However, had I been more technologically savvy, I could have fixed it myself. So, the Geek Squad is great, but they are expensive and perform services you could do yourself if you had the know how.
I had a bad experience with Geek Squad. I took my computer there and somehow when I received it, the computer had so little space on the hard-drive. I barely had enough room for two documents and a few pictures in the album. The updates were taking up all the space. I hadn't had that problem before I bought it in. I also think they charge something like 20-30 dollars to install a disk. That should actually be really cheap seeing as how it's so simple to do.
If I were you I would've sent the PC in for repair with a dummy drive with Windows installed. That way, you could just take a USB flash drive and extract everything you wanted from the old hard drive. And upload it to the drive you want to use. Thus saving space because all of that extra space-consuming stuff would be on the dummy drive. The essentials would be on the drive you are using.
I know. $200. I'm like no thanks on that. $200 can actually get me a whole new PC with Windows 8 installed already at Tiger Direct. Problem with that is, I have zero interest in Windows 8.
Like others have said, the people at Geek squad do a great job but their services are expensive. Most problems they can solve for you you can solve yourself through a little research and patience. Luckily for me, my roommate worked for Geek squad for years so if I ever had a serious computer issue I knew who to turn to. He, like the other guys at the local Geek squad place were hard workers and very honest.
I'm pretty sure he gave you a major discount at times as well. Or assisted you in fixing your issue. But for those of us who don't have friends or family who work at Geek Squad, we still have to pay $200 for a small job!
