My local electric company has begun offering what they call "green energy", where you pay a little more per month for the assurance that they're using solar or wind power to generate a percentage of your electricity. Much as I'd love to see everything switched to solar and wind, I do have to wonder if this is just a giant scam to part their clients from more money. Any ideas?

In Jamaica, a new CEO took over the sole utility company in Jamaica after moving from the States. She introduced "net billing" which allows customers who own wind turbines or solar systems to generate electricity for personal use, as well as, sell excess energy to the utility company in Jamaica at wholesale or "avoided cost" prices which are set and monitored by the utilities regulations company in Jamaica. However, the customer has to purchase electricity at the current rates.
