You may install an application that reminds you to take a rest after 20 minutes of working. Manual withdrawal from work may not work as you may get immersed in your work and work non-stop for hours. Workrave is a very good software that gets you off the work and gives much-needed rest to your eyes. You may install the software from the link below. Log In Working for hours together can cause dry eye syndrome, which if becomes chronic, requires surgery.
Eye strain can never be avoided, however there are a few things that could help you. I personally do use all of them. First of all, if you can, install F.Lux on your computer (Log In). What it does, is that it tries to adjust light settings of your monitor to your current background lightning. I find it very useful, especially in the evenings. Second, take a break every 20-30 minutes. I find that this is the most useful method of reducing eye strain. Look away, walk around, take a drink. Helps you relax too. Thirdly, if you can afford them, try Gunnar Glasses. They are quite expensive, however they also reduce eye strain by filtering the light. I hope those tips are useful for you! Let me know!
I'm more inclined to just turn off the pc to avoid eye strain. When my eyes see things in a blurry manner, then I know I have reached my limit and I will turn the pc off. My back seems more vulnerable though than my eyes.
I daresay that's a healthy suggestion. I do the same but not every 20 minutes. More like after every hour or, during the one hour break afforded to me. Despite my health concerns, I'm not exactly capable of worrying too much unless my lids start twitching involuntarily, pushing me to get away from the PC or laptop and take a rest. My glasses have anti-radiation so it takes time for eye strain to sink in. I also get a massage every weekend to relax my entire body. It helps a lot.
Taking frequent breaks are super important. I downloaded a program called "Flux" which has been helping me tremendously, and I would recommend it to anyone. It basically just changes the hue of your computer light to a more natural, yellow/orange light. The white light of Macbooks and a lot of other computers is especially hard on the eyes, and Flux helps a lot in that regard. It's a free app that I think anyone who uses the computer a lot should have.
I really don't get how people manage to get eye strains unless they'd spend excessive amounts at their computers or really had to face some degree of stress, because I've used a computer for 10 years now and never really complained about any issues with my eyes. And at that time monitors were really unsafe and obsolete.
I usually get up after a couple of hours and dance around. Sounds crazy but while I am dancing around I close my eyes. That way I am stretching my legs and easing the pain of eye strain. I love being on the computer so having eye strain is not going to stop me from being on the computer.
I take a break every hour from the computer if I an using it. Usually, I just look out the window and focus on the trees. Other times, I just stare at a wall which helps me remove the eye strain.
