Buying a kid a lot of gifts doesn't show that you love them more. Put in perspective it sends the wrong message to the kids, that you are trying to compensate for something which in most cases is not spending enough time with them. In any case, the more gifts the children get, the less they 'care' about them. So since kids don't mind if they get two or three gifts, you need to start lowering their expectations especially if you've been giving too many gifts in the past. Don't be too liberal with gift-giving on birthdays or some other special occasion. This will make the kids know that getting a gift every other day is not guaranteed. Keep cutting down the number of gifts [you give] to the point where the kids get maybe one or two gifts from you for ANY special occasion. It will save you a lot of cash in the long run.
