It's beyond ridiculous just how expensive things can get at the movies! -and those tips are really good, thanks for sharing. When we did used to frequent the movies, my husband and I would make a proper day of it. We'd go for dinner or lunch, depending on when we went, so that by the time we were ready for a showing, we wouldn't need to snack. We sometimes just got the drinks and that was it. That really saved us a lot of money. These days we're way too busy to go, and instead watch movies when they come out on DVD. I can't say we miss going to the movies :)

I rarely go to the movies and unless I get something for free, I don't buy snacks there. The issue I have is that the matinee shows are the least expensive but they are usually somewhere between lunch and dinner so you tend to get hungry. I know you are not supposed to, but I often take some kind of food in with me..because I am not paying for a 5.00 or more bucket of popcorn.

Well, they have begun to make cinema style type of popcorn that outclasses even the best movie theater popcorn these days. Butterkiss brand cinema style salty and sweet popcorn is absolutely scrumptious. Sometimes the theater's popcorn is on point and other times it is not as good, and the prices are ridiculous. Getting a bag prior to going is the cheapest and smartest way to enjoy popcorn.

I don't think we have that type of popcorn available in the U.S. Derek. I do use a Regal Cinema card to earn rewards on when going to the movies, but this card is not as good as it used to be, you used to be able to earn rewards fairly quickly, now it is rewards after every 50 points or something. However, in part, it is probably because I am going to the movies much less, that I am not reaping rewards like before.

I go fairly often to the movies especially during the summer, and have no problem foregoing snacks in the theater all together. If I didn't I would no longer be able to justify the trips, but it always struck me as a little odd paying to sit for 2 hours and then paying for food, even if from the business side it makes complete sense.

    1. I usually go to the movie theater in the noon, so it's not full and I can easily change the seat. I buy cheaper tickets but take seats that are more expensive. Nobody cares, really. However, If the real owner shows up, of course, I leave the seat immediately. I don't want any dramas and being escorted out for inappropriate behavior. It's not what I'm looking for.

    2. I don't like eating popcorn while watching. It's a distraction. Moreover, I don't want to gain any extra weight.

    3. Go in a huge group of friends. Sometimes theaters make discounts for them. It depends, however.

I don't know about you, but where I live, rarely there's people watching if we have our tickets. I hate this so much because I buy the tickets and when I go up to the movie room, there's no one to watch if we have our tickets or not. Next time I go there, i'm not buying a ticket.. Anyways, I never buy snacks in movies. I always bring them from home and put them in a bag. It's way cheaper and it can be healthier if you bring stuff you like. So I agree with you, totally.

I can't not snack when I go to the movies! It's just part of the treat haha. But I always bring my own. Movies popcorn, drinks, sweets... they are all sooo expensive! The popcorn does taste different though, I'm still working on gettingthat authentic flavor in my own popcorn.

Exactly. Snacking is part of the whole movie theater/cinema experience. I don't think I have ever in my life been to the cinema and not had popcorn and a Fanta Freeze. I have taken in store bought sweets too and just eaten them. Much cheaper than the sweets from the cinema. The authentic flavor of their popcorn is matched and surpassed by Butterkiss popcorn.

First of all, deciding if it's worth or not watching some movie already makes you save some good money, right?!

But let's go: I hardly buy snacks alone, I always share with my girlfriend or some friends. I always try to go to the movies on days where tickets are cheaper and I always try to buy tickets on my credit card when they offer some discount or promotion.

I love going to the movies. It's not even the idea of seeing the latest blockbuster that I enjoy so much - it's the two hours of mindless entertainment paired with a tub of buttery popcorn and a diet soda. It's pretty much heaven for me and my friends.

Every year, box office prices go up, and the price of snacks and beverages is absolutely ridiculous. I try to go in the afternoon to watch movies. Going in the peak hours will burn a hole in your wallet. Instead of watching 3D movies which are expensive, I go for 2D movies. I eat beforehand going to the movies so I won't have the craving for expensive movie theater snacks.

These are good tips on how to save money, but I prefer to feel relaxed and spend some money there, not too much only a snack and a drink. I cannot go with my kids to see a movie without to buy them something to eat. I can save money with different methods but not like this! I would probably use your tips only when I am alone with my wife, we are adults and we know how to avoid to spend money!

I can't resist not buying a snack when I'm going to watch a movie, so I always drop by at the supermarket and I will buy my junkfoods and soda there so that I can save a lot of money as compared to buying it from the vendors in the cinema.

Here are some of the things I do in order to cut my movie watching costs.
I don't buy snacks inside the theater, instead, I bring my own snacks.
I don't go to the movies in the weekend, weekend tickets cost more (in my town)
In my town, the morning shows cost half of day time show, therefore, I go to watch movie in the morning (usually at 8-9 in the morning)

I don't snack myself when I go to the cinema but my granddaughter and her friends like to. I don't think buying a bit of popcorn or a few sweets is going to break the bank so I buy it there, If it goes towards the cost of keeping the place open and maintained then I don't mind.

I am always bringing my own bottle of water and some snacks, if need be. The concessions are just way too overpriced to justidy anything there, although the popcorn is usually tempting.

We usually eat at home before going out. And that keeps us from eating at the mall. This also helps us out in many ways. You can see that going to movies with empty stomach may invite you for more expenses. So that's one of those things that need to be taken into consideration. Saving money is possible in that case. Though it's not going to be that easy though. It's just going to take a lot of time to put it into practice.

Here theaters don't allow outside food. So yes it can save lots of money but as we are not allowed we have no other choice. Either just don't eat or purchase it from inside theater. Personally I always avoid food inside theater because of cost as they are really costly compare to out side food. So its kind of wasting money. Sometimes it is okay , also with kids it is hard to avoid.

I think the best way to save money is to simply find good deals on movie tickets, trying finding good reliable places or websites that will give you the tickets at a modest price. Aside from that I would suggest you bring your own snacks and drinks to the movie theaters, the snacks there can be pretty pricey.
