I have been a cashier for a lot of different types of stores, retail store in the mall, fast food, book stores and so forth. Out of all of them I preferred the book store. It wasn't the only thing I did there, I would only get 1 one hour shift a day, but the people were friendly, it was pretty straight forward the bar codes were almost always in the same place and it was pretty easy.

Believe it or not I think I would choose Walmart. I know the pay is terrible but I would like to work the night shifts and people watch :) There sure are some weird people in there at night! haha.

I was a cashier at a Target for a while before being promoted to Guest Services and then Guest Services Attendant. Cashiering sucks if you work for a major bulk retail store. A smaller high-value, low-volume, store might be great. Restaurants or grocery stores could be nice if you want discounts. However, if I had to cashier again I'd work at a strip club... ha ha ha. Well, that or a place that sells something interesting like a sporting goods or game store.

Being a cashier can be very stressful. In some places they have to stand all day and listen to the brain numbing beeping sounds from their scanners. Often the light and air are bad at their work place. Not everyone can be in a neon-lit, air-conditioned environment all day. My head starts spinning if I am longer than half an hour in a place that has no natural feel to it. Also there is the boredom factor, and not to mention the mental strain from lack of stimulation.

I think the best place to be a cashier would be in a store where more cultured people buy, somewhere like Barnes and Noble maybe? I don't know which stores have good policies and which don't, but I know I would never want to be a cashier at Walmart or McDonald's.
