Note, nowadays you can get movies via NetFlix, satellite or cable pay-per-view, and Redbox. Also, they are shown on movie channels constantly. In that case, why would there be a market for buying movies, especially when new ones cost a good deal? Note, also, movies can get quite boring - which lowers the appeal of buying them vs some rental or rental-type situation.
Buying movies is something that I don't mind doing. I would be able to build my collection of movies and exchange titles with my friends if they so wish to do. The collection may serve to be an interesting discussion piece which may generate some lively interaction.
Definitely not. I'm a movie addict, so buying a movie will never be a waste to me. If I like the movie, I'll want to have it in my personal collection (because I have one) and I'll probably watch it over and over again over the years.
Some people like to buy physical copies of movies and add them to their collections. Some people watch movies over and over again. I also sometimes buy movies as gifts for people who I know collect them or will make good use of them. Not everyone has Internet or cable or Redbox nearby, so they are limited in what they can watch. Movies come in handy for them. In these cases, I guess it makes sense. If it's something that I think we (or the kids or grandkids) would get a lot of use out of, I would consider it then too. If I was planning on watching a movie only once, I wouldn't bother buying a copy of it. I'd rent it or wait until I could see it on a streaming service like Netflix or Amazon Prime.
I can't say it is waste as it is depend on person. And it is their personal choice. For me I was used to purchase movies in past, but now I am more used to of it. I go for theater or yes watch movie online as now lots of options are available. And as internet speed is quite fast these days I can easily watch them. With smart TV now we can directly watch them in TV too.
Actually, this depends on individuals. There are movie buffs who cannot wait till the time a new movie gets available on Netflix, Hotstar or in any other channel. Some are keen to build a collection. I am not a movie enthusiast. So, I find no point in buying them. However, there're some movies which looks promising from the promos. I occasionally buy those kind of movies to watch them without a wait.
@Jason76 What also lowers the appeal of buying movies (for me anyway) is the fact that once you build a nice collection, the format will change. Back in the day, we gathered a huge collection of VHS tapes. We have lots of Disney movies that the kids loved that we now want the grandkids to be able to watch. You can hardly even find a VCR any more, unless you find one used. So, those movies will be useless once our VCR decides to give out for good. So, then you start buying the next format, and the next. Nope, I'm not doing that again. Now, I only buy a movie if it's something really, super, good that we will watch many times, or if I find a particularly good sale. I won't bother with collecting any more though.
I think its fun to collect some of the old movies though on DVD,and you get the artwork as well and sometimes the DVD quality is better than streaming also. I like to watch a lot of foreign films sometimes so they are only available on DVD,and also you can shop on Amazon for a nice cheap used copy, and I make sure the artwork comes with it as well.
Like most mentioned it all depends since some people like to have movie collections which I think is fun as I used to have one. Now a days I watch them online though because it would be sad to start a collection and then have to give them away. I had good collection a few years ago of dvds and vhs movies but had to give them away since I moved and it was too much to take with me in a luggage. It would be kind of sad to see them fade away and only have them digital.
I really don't buy movies when I can watch them in online because I think it saves money. I am not much of a movie addict or something so I don't prefer buying a movie. If you want some movies, again and again, you can download it and have it in your system or in your mobile which we can play and see whenever we feel like watching them.
I believe buying movies is a waste. If you wait few years, you can watch it free on youtube. You can also burrow movies from your friends, family or library. There was a time when I used to buy DVDs, however, these days I have stopped buying DVDs. I watch online or burrow from friends and family.
I do think buying movies is a waste, as I seldom watch a movie more than once. I would prefer to watch it in the cinema if I like the movie. Moreover, I do not like keeping too much stuff at home, as I always have to clean them.I believe less is more.
If you are a collector who feels like rewatching a movie when nostalgia kicks in, then it is worth it. If you are the type who doesn't rewatch movies and doesn't like the idea of a physical and digital clutter, then don't even bother.
When the vhs was popular, we bought a vhs player and rented vhs tapes. There were promos in tape rental shops due to the stiff competition. And when the dvd came along, movies on dvd were expensive until the pirated version emerged. But even if the pirated are cheap, we do not buy. My policy is to be legal since I was with an organization in the movie industry. It is a big shame to patronize pirated dvds. And now that there are streaming options like Netflix, I guess buying movies has suffered a big loss. Why buy when you can watch the same movie at a cheaper cost?
If the movie is brand new and just came out on cable TV and the only way to watch it is to buy it (instead of rent it for a couple days- sometimes they don't give you that option when it first comes out) - then yes, I will buy it...and then get yelled at by my Dad later when he finds out and sees it on our cable bill. But if I can just wait it out, then I will rent it for a much cheaper price or better yet, wait until it eventually becomes free and you can watch it any time. So I wouldn't really say it's a waste, it just all depends on how patient you can be. If the movie brings you so much happiness because you've been waiting and waiting for it to become available on cable TV, then nahhh, it's not a waste. Whatever makes you happy in this life is worth it.
