It's safe if you know what you are doing. Check the seller's payment processor, make sure they have a valid SSL certificate and if you are still unsure, google them.
I have had very little issues shopping online. Just keep your wits about you. Companies like Amazon are also very helpful if anything goes wrong in the process . I highly recommend them.
