Some time ago, I remember watching in Dragons Den about a guy who invented a special multi-adapter that was able to save you electricity (called EcoTek). The idea is that, we tend to put many of our appliances (like TVs, satellite) into standby via our remote control. What this new multi-adapter does is to detect your "standby" off from your remote and then completely switch off your appliances - it can also detect you switching things back on when you power things back up with your remote. I had a power meter which showed that my main living room equipment was taking up a total of 20 Watts of energy simply on standby! - this multi-adapter helped to save some electricity though you have to watch out for the older equipment that takes longer to boot up. I think newer equipment are designed to be more energy efficient nowadays so it may be of limited use if you have recently bought new appliances.
