No need to buy any special gizmos or gadgets, this really works - I tried it myself. Not sure if metal bowls are a requirement however ( I used metal).
Ugh, that kitchen that he's in is gorgeous. I have not tried this way of peeling garlic because this is the first time I have seen this type of method. It almost seems too good to be true, however, you said you tried it and it works, so... I have a couple of metal pans that I can use, and I do use a lot of garlic because it is one of my favorite things to use in, I would say, 80% of my food. There is no way to tell whether or not it I actually use garlic in 80% of my food, but I'm just saying. Anyhow, I'm definitely going to give this method a try and see if it works.
I use a lot of garlic in my food and cooking, as well. It's a great ingredient to use. This is a pretty neat trick, but to be honest - I think it would take me more than 10 seconds. I've got to literally break the garlic head, then grab two metal bowls, then put everything in the bowl, then shake it... I'd rather just make less of a mess and do it the old fashioned way! If I was with a lot of friends or we were cooking with a lot of garlic, then I would do this just to show off!
That seems easy enough. It's rare that I need a whole head of garlic at once, though. I usually only need 2-5 cloves. I suppose I could open the whole head and then just freeze it or use it up over the next few days so I have an excuse to try this, hehe.
I am super jealous of his kitchen. I love fancy kitchens. Anyways, I agree peeling garlic is a pain the butt. That trick that he showed is absolutely amazing. I cannot wait until the next time I use garlic. I want to try this method. I wonder if you do not use a whole head of garlic, if you just break apart some of the cloves and put it in the bowl and shake it if that would work? It might not because the pounding with your fist may be what helps loosen the peel off of the clove. I'm not sure but I am going to give this a try sometime this week. Thanks for sharing!
Yes! This method works! I've heard about this method before and was really skeptical about it so I had to give it a try. I did exactly what this guy did and all the cloves came out perfect! I wouldn't say it only took 10 seconds since it felt that I was shaking the bowls together for quite a while but it sure peeled all the cloves of garlic and definitely saves you a whole lot of preparation time!
Ok, just a little follow up to this. I tried it again today on a few heads of garlic, and it didn't work. I think it had something to do with the garlic itself being a little too moist. I threw them into a ziploc bag and they sat in our cupboards for a week or so before I got around to doing this. They seemed a bit moist and a little softer than when we initially got them. They weren't rotten or anything at all, but it probably wasn't a good idea to have them in a bag like that, since the skins weren't as brittle as they initially were. So just a heads up, if the skins seem a little damp and/or the head of garlic a little bit soft overall, this might not work as planned.
I make a lot of dishes that require garlic. I have a lot of trouble peeling the skin off the garlic, so this trick looks perfect for me. I really have to peel and it gets stuck all over my hands, but this method would nip that right in the bud. I will try this tonight when cooking dinner. I do not use a whole head of garlic at once though, but can refrigerate the rest I guess.
