I finally save up enough money to get my kids a PS3. And now there is going to be a PS4. Is this going to make all the PS3 games obsolite? Will the PS3 die out in place of the PS4 now? Or is ths going to be fad like the Wii?
Don't worry about the PS3 dying outright after the release of the PS4 because that won't happen. Support for the PS3 would probably extend 1 to 2 years after the PS4 has been released. And besides, there are a lot of places where you could buy PS3 games. Look at the PS2. It's already more than a decade old but still you could buy games for it. As to whether the PS4 is a fad, we'll just have to wait and see.
Now it's the best time to get a PS3. With the upcoming of the PS4, there will be a significant sell on previous hardware, and most of the games will get cheaper and cheaper by the time. And the same thing will happen with the PS4, you better just wait for the Slim version to come out, or the price drops.
PS3 is still a great choice. I don't think you will have anything to worry about for a long time as far as it going obsolete. There are far too many games still being produced for it. We are waiting to invest in the PS4 for a little while. It may take time for them to work out all the little kinks. Remember when the PS3 first came out, they would over heat and catch fire? Plus, the PS4 is going to be outrageously expensive. My opinion is that playstation will never be a fad. We even bought a second PS3 just for the blue ray player. It was rated one of the best. The Wii was fun at times but the graphics were horrible.
There is still a lot of life left in the PS3 since the technology still holds up very well. I have seen the announcement and preview of the PS4 though and I have to say that it does indeed look like it's going to be glorious. There's a lot of speculation going on right now whether or not they will be allowing it to be backwards compatible with the previous Playstation games but it doesn't look like they will be allowing it. We can only guess for now though since it might be a year or two before we see it released.
