I love playing old RPG games. They bring back a lot of nostalgia from the days of my past. If you want to experience some great nostalgic moments too, here are some retro RPGs that I would recommend that you play:
    • Xenogears
    • Chrono Trigger
    • Chrono Cross
    • Vagrant Story
    • Final Fantasy VII, VIII and IX
    • Grandia
    • Grandia 2
    • Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
    • Final Fantasy Tactics
    • Legend of Dragoon
    • Legend of Legaia
    • Rogue Galaxy
    • Final Fantasy X and XII

Any other retro RPG that you would add to the list?

You limiting it to just console RPGs? I don't see Final Fantasy VI on that list, many people think this is the best one in the series. A lot of people also seem to love Earthbound, though I don't really like the game that much. Also, Phantasy Star series is pretty good, especially the later entries on the Genesis.

How about Quake and Doom? They came out in the mid 90's, so I think that they can already be considered as "retro".

Okay, Ocarina of Time isn't really an RPG...

And godammit, you just missed the whole barn.

Just get a PS1, that thing is the best system for old RPG games, and some of the best too. Xenogears, Final Fantasy, Vagrant Story, Chrono Cross really are some must play games to start.

Maybe not quite retro enough, but my favourite RPG of all time is Morrowind. I absolutely love the openness of that game, to the point that when you kill the wrong person, you won't be able to complete certain quests. I have spend so many hours just wandering around, exploring. Oblivion and Skyrim were entertaining too, but not a patch on Morrowind.

You can get it very cheap for the PC these days, and there's a ton of great mods out there that will improve graphic and add all sorts of new content.

Nah, I'm not limiting it to console games. It just happens that I played a lot of RPGs on consoles. I only played FPS and strategy games on the PC before. I haven't played Final Fantasy VI so it was not on my list. I haven't played Fantasy Star too. I've played Earthbound though and I think it was great. :D

I don't think that Quake and Doom qualify as RPG games. They are considered to be First Person Games. They're of course retro because they're already old. I think you could also consider them as classics. But then again, they're not RPGs.
