I have seen in California some home gardens with pits between plants. The owners said that the small hole on the ground is for the garden water which means you pour the water on that small pit instead of scattering the water with the use of a sprinkler. Scattered water is a waste, they said. Since then, I had been thinking of it and during summer when the ground is very dry, I dig a pit near the roots of the plant for purposes of garden water. At least the water I pour will go directly to the roots of the plant and be of use instead of just evaporating.
