Sleeping along the road

In recent years we've stayed in motels, even shopped around a bit if the town was big enough to have several motels. We've never had a bad experience. When we were young, we drove up the Alaska Highway when it was still gravel, to Anchorage and on down the Kenai Peninsula to Homer, Alaska and then back to southern New Mexico. We were traveling in a van with three kids, a dog, and a cat. We tented all the way, first in organized campgrounds, then along likely-looking creeks or lakes on the Alaska highway. We stayed in a motel every three days or so for shower and to do our washing. That was fun then, it would be a hardship npw, and a great adventure for the whole family.

I don't find this strange at all and that is exactly what I am talking about, sometimes it's just great to follow the road and see where we stop at the end of the day. If we have time we just might stay there for a few days as well, why not?
