What do you think is more worth buying? I remember seeing an attachment for the iPad which you stuck it into a removable keyboard and it typed. I know the iMac, Apple's laptop, is around a thousand dollars, while the iPad 3 is 600 dollars for 32 GB.

I prefer the laptop, and that's what I am currently using. I have tried using my friend's iPad, and I just didn't like it very much. I would rather have a keyboard. Maybe I will consider a tablet/iPad when the price drops to something I can actually afford.

Yes. A laptop which can do almost everything is worth than having an ipad. However, if you just wanted to surf online and maybe something to use while on the go talking to someone via skype go for a tablet.

I would always go with a laptop. It just has more all-around use, while with a tablet, you are limited by what the platform lets you to do. Also, of course, keyboard. :D

I will always prefer a laptop over a tablet any time of the day. Its because I can do way more with a laptop than with a tablet. I can play games, do my online work, and basically any thing that I love to do such as forum posting, and going on facebook. I guess tablets are great if you are only going to use it with video call or skype.

I prefer Laptop because it is much better than any other tablet out there. Tablet is more sensitive and heat up easily.

I would always prefer laptop over IPad or any tablets. I might even prefer an ordinary laptop even not the iMac because a tablet could not replace what the laptop can give you. Yes tablet does support office programs but you could not really maximize those programs on tablets. It will just look like a portable version.

As of right now, I will ultimately prefer a laptop. More features, more capabilities, you get the drift. For me, I use a lot of heavy duty programs such as Photoshop and video editing software like Sony Vegas, so tablets really won't be of much help to me. That is, until the Microsoft Surface comes out. If it delivers as what they promise it will deliver, then it should be a tablet with almost the same capabilities as a laptop.

I have to say laptop for me!! I had my Samsung tablet for all of three weeks before I sold it. I don't know why, but I just can't get along with touch screens, I find them much harder to navigate, which ends up frustrating me! :) I should have known better seen as I got rid of a touch screen for much the same reason last year!

If you absolutely have to choose, the laptop is the more practical and versatile of the two. Having said that, how you will use the laptop or tablet, might give you a better idea of the best choice for you. Each has its benefits and limitations. Then again, if your finances allow, bargains can be found that would allow the purchase of both. I have seen deals advertised with a laptop being sold with a free tablet.

There is a whole slew of Android tablets coming out that do just that, have detachable keyboards. There are even full fledged Windows laptops that will do the same thing, function as tablets. If you're seriously interested in one of these I would hold out a little longer and wait until there is a wider selection available. On a similar note though, keep in mind that Motorola just ditched it's Webtop system they were trying to sell along with Droid Bionic's last year. It never really caught on, because there was a limited amount of things you could get done in Andriod vs. a full fledged OS like Windows. Personally, I never use my tablet, and keep forgetting to charge it so it's dead whenever I do reach for it. I keep my phone charged and thats about it.

I prefer a laptop to a tablet because you can do so much things to a laptop, while a tablet does the basic job of only surfing the net. You can't even install great games in there because of system specification limits. So I think that I can do without a tablet, and just remain loyal to the good old laptop.

    They are different things! :D

Back in the days, it was desktop computers vs laptops, which made no sense to me! They are different things built for different needs. :D
It's like comparing apples to ... hmm... kumquat! Only common ground they had was what they were running.

Nowadays, there's a new tech in town. It's now, desktop computers vs laptops vs tablets! Heck, you can throw in smartphones too!

To me, you can't go wrong with having all three. I don't own a tablet, or a laptop, because my phone is enough. BUT, I am a potential buyer of the newly announced Nexus 10. Why? Because I don't need a laptop at the moment. I have my desktop for heavy duty work. My phone for checking my mail on the fly. And a tablet would be to watch YouTube/movies or read articles. The reason I never purchased the Nexus 7 was because it was too small for my needs. It's portable, but I don't need that benefit.

So, it's YOUR choice. What do you need them for? Tablets do not replace laptops, and laptops do not replace tablets.

I realize this is a old thread, but if you had listed your needs, a better decision could have been made. :)

I would suggest a laptop over a tablet. It is much easier to type out a paper on a laptop than on a tablet. Not only is the keyboard hard to type on, but even if you get an external keyboard, the screen is hard to see without positioning it a certain way. Ipads are not bad, but they are only half the price of a Mac. I would save your money and buy something that is a little more practical. If you are looking for something small and that is the reason you want to get a tablet, they make some pretty small laptops.

It really depends on what you want to do with it. For entertainment purposes, a tablet will work. For productivity, a laptop wins hands down. Personally, I don't really see the allure of tablets. The Microsoft Surface Tablet looks interesting because it also comes with a keyboard which is a step up in my mind.

I use laptop simply because most of the softwares that I use for my work are proprietary that won't work on tablets. Also I have to type a lot and I am not comfortable typing on tablet touchscreens. So while I have a tablet, it's strictly for entertainment while my laptop is for serious work.

I love my laptop, but I'm considering getting a tablet for using when I have a few minutes spare, but don't want to fire up the laptop - for example when I'm travelling. I work as a freelance writer, and I think a tablet would give me more flexibility and also more productivity, as I could use a spare few minutes to answer emails or do short jobs which wouldn't normally be possible on the move.

I would recommend getting a laptop before a tablet. With the tablet, you can't do as much as you want to rather than on a laptop you could do just about anything. If you already have a laptop I'd say go for a tablet so you can take it around easily (in public) instead of carrying a laptop everywhere you go.

A laptop is way, way, way better than a laptop for me. Specs aside, I prefer to have a mouse (or trackpad) and a physical keyboard. Sure, you can add all that to a tablet too, but in the end, you'd be wasting your money.

Sandra, do you know anyone with a tablet? I'd suggest you ask your friends if you can try out theirs before making the decision to get one of your own. I have a Nextbook that is great as an ereader and does okay when I need to read emails, but it has a lot of limitations. It basically functions as a phone would when surfing the net so many features are not available on certain websites and I can't seem to get apps for it.

I did figure out how to get Twitter and Facebook eventually, but my little "student" laptop has a larger screen and has more functionality and the cost was not much more than the Kindle Fire.
