The rain can be a great source of savings for the home and garden. I remember my mom collected rain water to use for washing clothes.
I have seen some roof modifications that harvest rain from the roof for household and gardening purposes but I have not tried installing these on my home yet. Do you think it is a good idea to build a rainwater collecting system? What other uses of rainwater have you tried?

I suppose it could be, but to be honest, it's way too much work for me personally. We don't get enough rain, nor do I have enough time really, to collect rain water to use for things like washing clothes. Realistically, water is my cheapest utility, too. So while I'd love to 'save the environment' and I'm careful with trying not to waste too much, I don't think I'll likely ever switch to trying to use rain water.

This is especially true of when I live in the city.... ew...

Depending on where you live [if it's a non-industrial area] the rainwater can be a good source of pure drinking water. You could store the rain water in numerous plastic containers and save up on bottled water if you bought that.

We had a big barrel in the garden that we used to collect rainwater in. We didn't depend on that water but if it happened to rain a lot, the water that gathered was money saved. The water was used for watering the plants that we grew in the garden.

If you live in an rural area that sees rain a lot, collecting rainwater is not a bad idea. But if you live in a city, I don't think it's worth the effort.
