People have always said you can't tell the difference, but Vegemite is cheaper than Marmite so I decided to try it out. I found a jar of Vegemite in Poundland and did the taste test. The verdict is you can tell the difference. Vegemite is saltier and has a slightly less syrupy texture than Marmite. Price wise, Vegemite is better value in the pound shops, but for taste Marmite rules, so use Vegemite for cooking and guests and keep the Marmite for yourself.
I have never actually tasted Vegemite because I have always regarded it as a poor man's version of Marmite LOL. So I'm glad that you sampled it and gave us some feedback. I like your idea of using it for cooking or keeping it for guests. I can take or leave Marmite. I grew up on the stuff and I didn't mind it at all right off the bat.
I didn't even know that there was such a thing called Vegemite?? Now I am going to have to open up Google, and google Vegemite, because I have never heard of such of thing. My immediate thought is that it is an alternative version of Marmite? I have never loved or hated Marmite. It is not the best tasting spread in the world. You kind of have to be in the right mood for it. I have never actively purchased it though.
I know what you mean, DreekLass! Marmite is "just there", and it's interesting that although I grew up on the stuff, I have never actually bought it myself! I can't even remember the last time I ate it. Yet I'm sure if it were there, I might just have some. It's a weird one.
I also sort of grew up eating Marmite. There was never really any available when I was at home, but when I was spending time at my grandparents' house, which used to happen a lot, we were always allowed to have it. I can't remember the last time I ate it either; it's been that long.
ISn't Vegemite the Australian version of Marmite? Either way, I can definitely tell the difference between the two and much prefer Marmite. Having said that, I haven't bought the stuff for years either.
I never heard of Vegemite before traveling to Australia. I’ve never heard of Marmite. At first I didn’t like the taste of Vegemite at all. It tastes very bitter. However, I think it takes getting use to because after I tried it several more times I began to like the taste. It is great on toast with a little butter. I don’t know if you can get it in the US? Is Marmite the American version of Vegemite?
This is also my very first time hearing of Vegemite. it sounds disgusting though, if my knowledge of Marmite is anything to go by. I am going to have to now Google Vegemite and find out what it is. But it sounds absolutely disgusting lol. I am guessing that it is like Marmite in that it will be one of those things that you will either live or hate.
