I'm a believer that every single state has a little known attraction, or something special about it that not a lot of people know about. California has a lot of state parks, sure, but one of the state parks in my area has what we call "Garden of Eden"; it's basically like a watering hole, except bigger and has a waterfall! What are some attractions in your state that's not mentioned in travel books or blogs?
In the Philippines, our best attractions are the beach resorts. Foreign tourists come for the beaches in our country. And the most popular beaches are in Boracay. It is a long coastline with a variety of beach resorts, from low end to high end and some resorts even have hotels and golf courses. So I guess our beach resorts are the pride of our country.
I live in Eastern Europe, and somewhere in my country, more specifically in the western part of it, we've got a really beautiful castle which has been just recently improved at the exterior, but nobody seems to bat an eye about it. In the detriment of it, a really rather ugly but hyped castle, which everyone visits just because of its popular name. I personally don't care that much about the name of a respective attraction as much as about what it's got to offer, really.
There’s a weekly night market waaaaaay out in the sticks that mostly only locals know about. I wasn’t even aware of it myself until this year. All sorts of wonderful food and craft vendors, live music, a tiki bar, the works. It’s right near the seashore too, so if you want to get away from the crowds you can take a little walk and chill out there. It’s a bit of a drive getting there, but it’s worth it.
In my home town of Youngstown, Ohio, there is the DeYor Theater, formerly known as Powers Auditorium, but more famously known by it's original name - Warner Theater. This is where Warner Brothers got started, by several brothers from Canada who settled in Youngstown and started the film company. In Warren, Ohio there is a life size replica of the Luner Lander as well as a tribute to Neil Armstrong who is from the area. It's in kind of an unremarkable location, right next to a McDonalds, lol. Also in Warren, Ohio, in between a parking deck and a Burger King, is a street that's been renamed Dave Grohl Alley - in honor of the Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer who is also from the area. The short alley features artwork honoring Dave.
I'm from New Jersey which is also know as the Garden State. It's known for it's beauty of plants and well... gardens . Lots of farmland here as well. But those aren't necessarily the fun places that I go to. I'm not sure how well know these attractions are but I would say if you come to New Jersey these are 2 must go to places. First is Six Flags: Great Adventure. Not really Garden State nature but a blast of a theme park. Has several record breaking rides in that park and it's huge. Has a safari, theme park, water park and more. Bring your kids there and they'll play themselves till they drop. Second is Atlantic City, the city of gambles. Lots of casinos and what I love about it the most is the boardwalk. It's right next to the beach so you can go tanning or swimming. Afterwards I usually take a walk on the board walk and there's a lot to see. From random stores, to museums, to casinos, to malls and finally to random street performances. Get's very lively. Lots to look at, shop for and do. You'll have a blast. Those are always my go to vacations if I'm ever free.
Oh here in Virginia, we have many well known tourist attractions but some that are primarily known to locals and are gorgeous is a quarry in Strasburg Virginia Half Moon Beach is the area. It is a rock quarry open to the public and offers camping and swimming in a beautiful natural area. Another place is Great Falls in Northern Virginia. These are Falls on the Potomac river in an area that is as rugged as the old West.
I live in Memphis, TN so there's not much here to do, well in my opinion. We get a lot of tourist to see Elvis Presley's Estate, and the city recently open the pyramid, its a bass pro shop, that's recently gotten a lot of tourists other than that I can't think of other attractions that tourists would come to Memphis to see.
I live in sydney New South Wales. The Sydney Opera House is a thriving hub of art, culture and history and the Sydney Harbour Bridge is arguably the most famous of all of Sydney’s architectural gems and becomes the centrepiece of Sydney’s world famous NYE fireworks display that lights up the night sky every year.
