We are in the process of paying off our 0 % interest credit card. Once we've done that by August, we will be moving on to getting into Bridging Loan mortgage for another house closer to school and workplace. So, living in a semi-rural residential property would be our choice. Research and making comparisons, and asking people (my daughter), it appears that gas, water town bills are another expenses every month we cannot afford to add to the new mortgage loan repayments. Right now, we use rain water tanks, and monthly gas bottles costing $120/month; electricity in winter is approximately $270/month. And my daughter and family of two little children pay $435 for (flouridated) town water every three months. Any advice, please, that might be able to help us decide wisely?
In my personal experience it is cheaper to go with electricity, of course i'm talking about it on the long run. People usually consider gas for the kitchen, but an electricity powered kitchen is way more effective and way more safe, especially if you've got children in the house. You'll have to consider space too, gas bottles and gas powered devices usually take up a lot of space, that was a huge influence on me too when I considered it for my house. Hope I was of some help to you, and good luck with whatever you choose
I have really limited experience using gas for heat. This house is all electric so I really have no way to compare it. I know some people can use tankless water heaters for instance if they have gas, and these cut bills down by quite a bit, but it is really an individual decision as to which you choose to use for your heat and cooking. It is simply up to you, and is a personal decision.
According to my analysis, electricity is much cheaper compared to gas. For a start, electricity is generated from a renewable resource in the form of hydropower but gas reserves are finite and subject to market fluctuations common in the petrolium industry. A comparison of the cooking expenses of has and electricity over a month for similar uses yields a substantial positive dividend in savings as far as gas is concerned.
For cooking purposes, filling regularly a gas canister to start the burner of our gas kitchen rather than use the electric oven. I can't give you exact Watt consumption figures, but Electric kitchens and ovens requires a great deal of Watt/hour to properly heat the surface of the burner, is not quite cheap to rely on them for cooking in the long term.
Gas is much cheaper. Even though I prefer cooking on a gas stove, I would never go back to using gas. My gas bills were through the roof. I had bills ranging anywhere from $300-$500 and still had an electric bill to pay on top of that. So, you don't want to have two separate utility bills. Gas really fluctuates and that really sucks, but I would truly suggest going total electric for the cost savings in the long run.
To be honest this is one of the questions where there is no one size fits all answer - simply because - the price that consumers pay for the various utilities - natural gas as well as bottled propane/butane, electricity and water - tends to differ greatly from country to country as well as within different areas of each country too - meaning electricity can be way more expensive in some places than gas and vice versa. Therefore - as it is totally impossible to say which would be the cheapest in any given area or country - the best option generally - in order to make the most cost effective decision - is to evaluate all the individual utility costs in the area that you are planning to live in. That said - having lived in many different countries - I can't say that I've ever found electricity to cheaper than the alternatives - in fact where I live now - electricity is so horrendously expensive that if you lived in an all electric home you'd be going bankrupt in next to no time.
The best option is solar power. It is one time investment and there will be no monthly bills.Maintenance is almost zero for at least two years. If you can have it installed, install solar in your home. You can use it just like electricity to cook food as well as run TV. If you use gas, it has limited usage, you cannot run TV with gas. Solar is cheaper than gas and electricity.
