I use glass plates in my house. Growing up we used a lot of paper plates and my fiance did before I moved in. For some reason we stopped, probably because I did the dishes every night. I like paper plates for outside gatherings or gatherings with lots of people. If not I don't mind doing the dishes. Especially now that we have dishwashers. Makes things so much easier.
Right now we have a mixture of plastic, glass and ceramic plates. We use the plastic plates a lot more than the others. These are mostly for everyday use. On a few occasions, we would also use the plain glass ones. If we are having guests on a special occasion, however, we would bring out the ceramic plates, the ones with patterns on them, since they have a more sophisticated look than the plain glass or plastic plates. These ceramic plates are usually washed, dried and put away in a cabinet once the guests are gone.
I use cheap dinnerplates from places like IKEA as they're cheap enough that it doesn't really matter much if they get broken, and they're also microwave safe so I can use them for microwaving if I need to as well. I don't like to use plastic for microwaving. However I do have sets of plastic cups, bowls and plates for parties that I use, especially if there are children involved in those parties, to avoid things getting broken.
@sidney....You know, that's really worrying because I've heard the same thing too! I've heard that even recycling water bottles to carry water in is not recommended. It's advised you recycle such bottles for no longer than say a week! -and for a long time in the past I'd hang onto a bottle for maybe a month. Obviously I'd clean it and rinse it out, but apparently that's enough to put your health at risk!
While I do prefer the look of glass plates, I usually just end up using plastic. I am a very clumsy person and have broken countless of plates and glasses. Thankfull, ther are a lot of really pretty options out there for plastic sets. Tupperware has some amazing ones, and thematic too! For cups I just usually use the mug I bought at the wizarding world of Harry Potter, keeping the magic alive!
@Lushlala, I think it depends on the type of plastic too, because I have been drinking from a plastic container since I was a child, and so far, nothing adverse has happened to me yet. So maybe the soda bottles are harmful, but not the Tupperware ones.
We used to have a lot of plastic plates and cups but not anymore. Nowadays we use ceramic. It is healthier I think because with plastic you will notice with time that the plastic gets scraped more and more. This means the plastic dissolves after using and washing it. You have to be very careful with what you eat from. Now if any case we would not have any ceramic than I would turn to paper plates and cups but definitely not plastic!
I prefer glass or ceramic cups over plastic. When I was a kid I always drank from plastic cups (especially because I was scared I would break any fragile ones). I never really minded them until I was a teen. My mom (being a mom, of course) read an article one afternoon about how plastic is causing all of these health issues in kids and adolescence, and after that she bought a bunch of glass and cermaic cups. Since then, I've grown to like glass/ceramic cups. They last a lot longer then plastic cups (seeing as you don't drop them), they're more durable, and they look more sophisticated.
I really don't like plastic or glass plates. I prefer ceramic or stoneware plates. When I was much younger I worked in the China and Silverware dept of a big department store. I think that has affected my choice in dinnerware. No, I don't have the money to buy expensive dinnerware, but I do buy my dinnerware at outlets. I get real dinnerware at great prices. The same goes for glassware.
Oh my gosh! So sorry. For some reason I thought the thread was about cups, rather than plates. The same kind of goes for plates though... Thought I'd just clear my mistake up lol.
I prefer paper, it's a shame they're not useful for more applications. I love to just be able to toss a plate in the recycling bin and get them at like .1/.2 cents each. Might not seem like much, but it saves me time on wasteful dishes and keeps the sink free for longer
Hehe interesting you should say that, @sidney! -and I totally agree because right across the world, people serve children in plastic plates, cups and all sorts and have done for forever. Sometimes I think researchers run out of things to throw out there to scare us LOL I guess it could depend on the kind of material used. I just try not to recycle my fizzy drink or bottled water bottles too many times and hope for the best LOL
I only use ceramic dishes. They are not that much more expensive, and their durability is far superior. Not to mention they are usually way prettier and finer.
@Lushlala, I also think that way too, lol. But if ever there was indeed some truth to the things that they are saying, the harm may be VERY MINIMAL, because look at us, drinking from plastic containers for decades and still healthy with no signs of weakness or sickness!
I know, @sidney! That's why I sometimes take these findings with a pinch of salt LOL Some of them can come across as being all about scare mongering, to be honest! I WILL read them, just so I'm aware, but I generally don't take everything they say as gospel truth. The rate at which there are new findings telling us about all sorts of danger we're putting ourselves at risk of, we'd never eat or drink anything. We'd probably never leave the house LOL
@Lushlala, That's so true. If ever plastics were to be dangerous, I guess those would be the kind where there are printed designs on them, especially the ones that were made in China.
And @sidney, wouldn't there be a huge drive to stop us using them?! Plus I bet some countries would probably move to ban them. So it doesn't rally add up at all. I think if there's any risk, it's negligible and not likely to cause as much damage as we're led to believe LOL
@Lushlala, That's so true. But how about the rumors that say that certain frying pans are dangerous? Both coated and non-coated ones? I think they aren't as dangerous as they would have us believe.
Hehe @sidney....I did hear that and honestly, I just burst out laughing! I mean, that's just ridiculous. The majority of people can't afford expensive and posh cookware, we buy what we can afford. So it looks like we're all going to perish because we use cheap utensils LOL Whatever!
