Before I got married, I would buy a plant for my boyfriend instead of cut flowers. He didn't have any plants in his apartment, so an easy to care for plant in a nice basket or pot seemed like the best choice for me. Cut flowers get thrown out within a week - a plant can last forever.

I have never bought flowers for my boyfriend or my now husband. He doesn't care for flowers or plants. They wouldn't last even if I did. He loves desserts and chocolates. For Valentine's Day, I usally get him a heart shaped box full of candies and his favorite cologne, or a new shirt. Something small, yet useful.
As a female, I do not like to receive flowers. While I do think they are pretty and a very sweet gesture, I don't care for them. They die within days. Not only that, but they are nothing more than something to look at. I would much rather have chocolates, something I can eat, not just admire. I do know that many of my friends love to receive flowers on Valentine's Day. Usually pink or red roses or yellow lillies. Perhaps I am just odd. :)
