I used to plug my laptop into my tv but the laptop would keep switching itself off. This was probably due to the cpu overheating with the demand of projecting the image on to a large screen tv, laptops are more prone to overheating than desktop PC's as all the parts are in a much more confined space. My laptop was quite old however, you shouldn't have any problem with a more up to date one or desktop PC.
