Would You Haul Trash Yourself If It Were Cheaper?

In many areas, trash pick up is calculated in with other services such as a water bill (which is what we have now). In others, you may need to hire a waste removal company. Some of these can be a little pricey (as well as often being fairly particular).

When we lived further out in the country, this was the case. You could either hire the local company or haul your own trash (or burn it as some chose to do). It was quite a bit less to take a load to the dump than it was to have it removed. Granted, trash sat around longer until it made a load, and it was a pain to deal with.

Would you go to the trouble to save money?

It would be a nice way to save some money if you are able to haul your trash to the dump by yourself. However, there are some factors to be considered here to see if it would be viable to do so.The proximity of the dump to where you are, the time period when you are allowed on the dump site. Will these factors be favourable enough to ensure smooth disposal of the trash by yourself?

Yes, in this rural community almost everyone hauls there own trash. There are convenient collection points set up in the community where you can take your trash, do recycling etc. I think you can get trash collection services for a fee, but I don't know anyone who uses them. There are just two of us here, and we don't generate extreme amounts of trash so it is no big deal to take it to be collected.

Same here, @Ke Gordon@Ke Gordon. There's only me and my husband, so we don't generate that much rubbish. So I wouldn't have any problem whatsoever hauling my own rubbish. Like with where you live Ke Gordon, in Botswana people in rural areas do have to sort out their own rubbish. My mum and dad are able to do so with theirs, so if they can, we should be able to if needs be.

We have a huge movement towards recycling here right now, and that gets picked up specially all the time for sorting. I personally would always prefer if specialists were handling things, but trash just gets shoveled right now :(

In my hometown you can either pay for trash hauling services or get rid of it yourself. I prefer the latter because most of the kitchen waste goes to the compost pit and everything else gets burned at the end of every week.

Come to think of it, very few people here pay for waste disposal services but I've seen garbage trucks in some of the [more] affluent neighborhoods.

There is a garbage truck that regularly comes once a week to haul our garbage. Sometimes our housemaids would miss the honking of the garbage truck especially if they are sleeping in the afternoon - the usual time the truck arrives is around 3 pm to 5 pm. When we miss the garbage truck, we had to seal the trash bags very well for they will develop unpleasant odor.

My husband devised a trick so we will not miss the garbage truck when it comes. He instructed our housemaids to give 1 big bottle of soda to the garbage collector as token of appreciation to their service. Excellent trick. Now the garbage collector would ring our door bell and wait until a housemaid acknowledges. We never miss the truck again for a long time now.

Where I live we don't have that option - as because there is no trash collection and we can't burn it ether - due to the laws regarding fire hazards and the possibility of forest fires - we have no choice but to take it to the municipal compound ourselves - which even allowing for the somewhat erratic opening times - fortunately isn't too much of problem - particularly as we don't generally have very much trash to dispose of - as the majority goes on the compost pile.

No I would not do that, because the charge for the monthly pick up of the thrash over here is quite cheap already, I think it's below $5, so it's not much of a loss for the convenience that you get.

We have public garbage collection, courtesy of the local government, which used to be regular, but, perhaps because of too much politics within the institution, hasn't been too frequent these days. Still, where I'm from no one pays for trash collection. We just place all the garbage bags in a single designated area in the neighborhood and wait for the next garbage collection.

I have no problem hauling trash as I do it all the time. See, I have lived most of my life in the countryside and I see people taking your trash out as sort of a luxury. Anyway, I certainly wouldn't pay someone as I need to save the money - but I do realize people need jobs in this tough world.
